Pixar’s first theatrical release since the pandemic will feature several Asian American characters.
Turning Red centers around Mei Lee who is voiced by Rosalie Chiang and described as a confident 13 year old struggling to be the dutiful Asian daughter and her desire to experience adolescence to the fullest, according to Comicbook.com.
Her overbearing mother, Ming, is portrayed by Sandra Oh. Adding a twist to this animated feature is Mei Lee’s tendency to transform into a giant red panda whenever she gets too excited.
The movie also features Pixar’s first Sikh character, a security guard. Maitreyi Ramakrishnan of Never Have I Ever fame plays Priya, Mei Lee’s best friend.
The film is directed by Domee Shi who rose to prominence in Pixar with the short Bao.
Turning Red is set to be released March 11.
