Pixar film will include its first Sikh character

Turning Red, Pixar’s anticipated full length animated feature, will not only mark the studio’s first feature length film directed by an Asian woman, Domee Shi, it will feature the first Sikh character.

South Asian Americans expressed excitement over the revelation first seen with the release of Turning Red’s trailer on July 13.

The India Times pointed out the accuracy and theintimate detail Pixar presented this character, a security guard.

He is seen wearing a ‘kada’ which the publication described as an “essential ornament.” He also is in a navy-colored turban and a uniform.

Turning Red also features Rosalie Chiang, the voice of Mei Lee, a 13-year-old who transforms into a giant red panda.

Director Shi first gained attention with her featured short, Bao, which won an Oscar in 2018.

Turning Red is due out March 11, 2022.
