SF Police Chief & DA to attend town hall on anti-Asian violence

By Randall Yip, AsAmNews Executive Editor

Just days after several hundred people rallied in San Francisco demanding greater action to stop anti-Asian violence, Police Chief Bill Scott and newly appointed district attorney Brooke Jenkins agreed to attend a town hall to address the issue, according to rally organizers.

“The SF Police Chief & DA have met our demand for a no
questions barred town hall next Tuesday,” Justin Zhu, founder of Stand with Asians said to AsAmNews.

The gathering will take place at 6 pm on August 16 at Victory Hall on 829 Stockton Street in Chinatown.

“Thank you to Chief Scott for the swift response and DA Jenkins for joining,” the group tweeted.

Demonstrators marched from Washington Square Park in North Beach to Portsmouth Square in Chinatown Sunday calling for the safety of senior citizens and mobilization of police to capture suspects.

Zhu asked for a town hall meeting with Scott within 10 days. Several police officers attended the demonstration and spoke out at the rally.

“Myself, my fellow officers at Central Station and the entire department condemn these actions. We take these crimes very seriously, very personally,” Lieutenant Mark Moreno said Sunday to the demonstrators.

San Francisco Police Commissioner Kevin Benedicto also attended.

A Go Fund Me campaign to pay for private security to protect Asian elders in San Francisco has raised $14,000 in five days.

Stand With Asians quickly organized Sunday’s rally after the beating of Mrs. Ren, a 70-year-old Asian American woman brutally beaten for her cell phone near her housing complex in North Beach.
