A New York City Chinatown meat market has agreed to pay a $250,000 fine, the highest civil penalty for food violations, the US Attorney’s office of the Southern District of New York announced Monday.
The 2019 complaint against the defendants Chung Shing Meats, Inc. aka “New Chung Hing Meats, Inc., “Wing Hong Cheung, Miao He Feng, Yiu Kwan Cheung, Tian Lun Feng were found to be misbranding, repackaging and reselling pork, beef, duck and poultry without the USDA Food and Safety Inspection Service (USDA-FSIS) seals or marks.
The market is located at 19 Catherine Street and is now called, “Sun Ting Fat Meats.” It is not clear if the market is still owned by all or some of the defendants.
In addition to the food violations, the defendants admitted to failing to keep “requisite purchase invoices.”
The defendants, must no longer sell, transport or buy meat without the USDA-FSIS mark, keep a tight record on their business transactions, and comply with The Federal Meat Inspection Act (“FMIA”) and Poultry Products Inspection Act (“PPIA”).
There could be additional financial penalties if the defendants were found to be in violation again.
