Today, September 19 is National Voter Registration Day.
Groups such as APIA Vote and the National Asian Pacific American Women’s Forum are urging everyone to participate.
Voter participation among Asian Americans reached record highs in 2018 and 2020 and in 2022 voter turnout increased 33 percent among Asian Americans in battleground states– giving themselves a strong say in pivotal elections.
“The increase in turnout of the Asian American and Pacific Islander community between 2016 to 2020 accounted for the margin of President Biden’s victory,” said Kristina Doan, NAPAWF’s Chief Field Officer and a second-generation Vietnamese American said in a statement sent to AsAmNews. “Especially in Southern states where the AAPI population is growing, we are positioned to be the pivotal voting bloc to decide the future of our country.”
APIA Vote has been mobilizing volunteers across the country to help register voters.
AsAmNews is supporting that effort.
In 40 states across the country, you can register to vote online. You can also check on the status of your registration if you moved or haven’t voted for a while.
APIA Vote reports that just 10 states do not allow online voter registeration, and that number continues to dwindle.
Arkansas, Montana, Wyoming, North Dakota, South Dakota, Texas, Oklahoma (not fully implemented), Mississippi, New Hampshire, Maine (will be implemented on November 1, 2023 currently do not have online registration.
