Rep. Andy Kim of New Jersey announced Saturday his bid to unseat Sen. Bob Menendez in the Democratic Primary next year.
Menendez and his wife have come under fire after being indicted on Friday, accused of accepting thousands of dollars worth in briberies to aid the Egyptian government and other businessmen, reports Politico.
Kim was the first Democrat from the New Jersey congressional delegation to call for the senator’s resignation, and subsequently, announce a bid for his chair.
Kim has represented New Jersey’s 3rd Congressional District since 2019. He is also a member of the Congressional Asian Pacific American and Progressive caucuses, reports CNN.
Menendez, who was appointed to the Senate in 2006, has however refused to resign. The senator was previously charged in 2015 with alleged conspiracy and bribery deeds in exchange for political favors.
