Mehdi Hasan announces he is leaving MSNBC

Indian American journalist Mehdi Hasan announced that he is leaving MSNBC in search of new challenges ahead of the election year. His departure comes shortly after MSNBC announced that it was canceling his show “The Mehdi Hasan Show.”

Hasan broke the news at the end of the last “The Mehdi Hasan Show” on Sunday. MSNBC also confirmed the news in a statement to POLITICO.

Since October, Hasan has been outspoken about Israel’s assault on Gaza, resulting in the deaths of thousands of Palestinians, many of whom are children. According to Democracy Now!, a news outlet called Semafor reported that MSNBC reduced the roles of Hasan and two other Muslim broadcasters after the violence began.

MSNBC has not provided a specific reason as to why the network canceled Hasan’s show. The anchor also did not give specifics about the reasoning behind his departure.

“Yes, I’ve decided to leave,” he said. “To be clear, I am so proud. So, so proud of what we’ve achieved on this show, on this network. And I can’t thank you enough for tuning in and for your support and for your feedback. But as I say, New Year, new plans.”
