Community members are honoring all those impacted by the shootings in Monterey Park on the first anniversary.
A year ago today, gunman Huu Can Tran entered Star Ballroom Dance Studio and opened fire. He then traveled to Lai Lai Ballroom & Studio in Alhambra where he was disarmed by a brave, young man named Brandon Tsay.
Remembrances and vigils have been held in the days leading up to the first anniversary. Last weekend, the local dance community gathered at Lai Lai Ballroom & Studio to honor the victims and promote mental health resources.
Two days after the shootings in Monterey Park, a gunman killed seven people in Half Moon Bay, California, five of whom were Asian. President Joe Biden released a statement on Sunday ahead of the anniversary of both shootings.
“As we mourned with the community of Monterey Park, we learned a gunman killed seven people in Half Moon Bay, California. Jill and I continue to pray for the families of the victims and many others traumatized by these attacks,” the statement reads in part.
According to ABC 7, a vigil and night of remembrance will be held tonight at Monterey Park City Hall. The candlelight vigil will begin at 6 p.m., KTLA reports.
