’The Other Ones’ and the wind phone

by Martin and Rich Lee

Lots of kids had invisible friends growing up and we all sometimes talk to ourselves to get over a hump or lift our mood. For those who have lost a loved one, we sometimes talk to them at the cemetery or before bed. For adoptees and those who have been displaced because of war or environmental catastrophe, the wind phone is a way to connect and feel connected. To say things you can’t say aloud or to another. Give it a try!

In Japan, wind phones are one-way telephones used to talk to deceased loved ones.

Martin and Rich Lee are second-generation Korean American brothers. Martin is a retired elementary school teacher and the illustrator of the strip. Rich is a professor of psychology in Asian American studies at the University of Minnesota and writes the content.
