A special election has been called for this Friday to decide the Democratic race for the US Senate in Hawaii.
Colleen Hanabusa who trails Brian Schatz by 1635 votes says its still too soon after the storm to call an election, and is threatening to sue to stop it, reports the Huffington Post.
The primary was held Saturday, but due to the heavy storm that hit the island, two precincts were unable to vote.
Originally voters in the two precincts were to receive a mail ballot and would be given three weeks to return them, but those plans have changed.
“We’re going to have to file something in court, because I feel that what’s going on is really disenfranchising a lot of people,” said Hanabusa to the Star Advertiser.
Hanabusa is also calling for voters in two additional precincts to be given an opportunity to vote as well.
Hanabusa and Schatz are vying to finish out the remaining two years of late Senator Daniel Inouye’s term. Inouye’s dying wish was for the Governor to appoint Hababusa, but Neil Abercrombie chose Schatz instead until an election could be held.
