Reaction to an apology from the Academy over anti-Asian jokes has been less than enthusiastic from many in the Asian American community.
Actor George Takei who was one of 25 Asian American members of the Academy to sign a letter protesting the jokes told the New York Times “It was a bland, corporate response. The obliviousness was actually shocking. Doesn’t anyone over there have any sense” Takei asked.
In its apology, the Academy wrote:
“The Academy appreciates the concerns stated, and regrets that any aspect of the Oscar telecast was offensive. We are committed to doing our best to ensure that material in future shows be more culturally sensitive.
“I apologize for any hurt the skits caused,” said Dawn Hudson, the Academy’s chief executive.
The apology deemed a non-apology by some Asian Americans on social media left some frustrated and demanding more.

Alan Chan added Not good enough! @TheAcademy offers weak apology for offensive #Asian jokes.
Miss Cherry agreed saying she’s “not sure about this apology.”
Not sure about this apology. I have questions. Why did the Academy issue it and not Chris Rock? Was it really an apology?

Jenn Sneider also was left unsatisfied tweeting “Apparently the Academy’s way-too-fast, half-assed apology is not good enough! AMPAS leadership has long been a mess as far as I can tell…”
