Consulting firm Accenture is facing a discrimination lawsuit brought forth by a Muslim Indian employee. Mohammed Ali claims that, despite his excellent performance at the company, he was demoted and received a lower salary and no annual bonus based on his religion and race, according to Bloomberg.
Ali adds that he was tasked with reaching a sales target of $50 million while his co-workers only had to earn $30 million in business.
In the complaint, Ali claims that his manager, who is White and knew of Ali’s religious affiliation, said he “wasn’t going to be like Bernie Sanders and give handouts” and that he agreed “with all of Trump’s views,” Bloomberg reports.
The lawsuit alleges that “the discrimination has caused Mr. Ali significant economic harm—in the neighborhood of seven figures.”
Accenture spokesperson Stacey Jones responded to the lawsuit by saying that Ali’s claims are “without merit.”
Muslims makes up just 1% of the United States population, yet approximately 40% of religious-based discrimination cases in the workplace were related to Muslims in 2015, according to Pew Research and the U.S. Equal Opportunity Employment Commission.
Accenture’s website states its commitment to creating a diverse workforce.
“Inclusion and diversity are fundamental to our culture and core values at Accenture,” the Inclusion and Diversity page reads. “We believe that no one should be discriminated against because of their differences, such as age, disability, ethnicity, gender, gender identity and expression, religion or sexual orientation.”
The company also created a social media campaign titled #InclusionStartsWithI to “spark discussion with our people around our role in creating and fostering a positive, inclusive environment.”
This is not the first case of discrimination made by an Indian employee at Accenture. Last year, Elton Kent sued the firm, claiming he received less pay and benefits that his American counterparts, according to News India Times.
