An Indian American pharmacist has been sentenced to 17 years in prison for billing the government 57 million dollars for painkillers that were never prescribed or weren’t needed.
Babubhai (Bob) Patel owned 26 pharmacies in the Detroit area, reported Times of India. He paid people to offer cash to medicare and medicaid patients in exchange for their account numbers. Doctors were paid to write phony prescriptions, according ot prosecutors.
The scheme was carried out between 2006 -2011.
Patel was ordered to pay 18 million dollars in restitution.
