KCET: Asian American Performers Struggle to “Make It” in U.S.

posted by Randall

AziatixThe Asian American trio Aziatix (pictured left) made news recently when it signed an $11.3 million contract with Cash Money, the same label that has signed Nicki Minaj, Lil Wayne and Drake.

But a story by KCET questions whether Asian American groups can have the “racial authenticity” to make it in the United States.  Far East Movement and Psy not withstanding, the music scene is lined with Asian American acts that failed to strike a chord with American audiences.

Some have chosen the path of striking it big in Asia rather than challenge the stereotypes held by American audiences. Even some acts that have “made it” in Asia failed to catch on in the United States.

What do you think, are Far East Movement and Psy proof that American audiences are changing and Asian Americans can strike it big in the United States? Or are they the rare exception that few will be able to follow? Read the story in KCET and let us know what you think.
