(Updates previous post when I incorrectly stated that ESPN had not yet issued a response to the error)
ESPN had some explaining to do over a graphic error reminiscent of the KTVU Asiana pilot name gaffe.
Covering the Little League World Series, the network introduced Asian-Pacific player Nagiru Hiramatsu.
ESPN, as do other networks, likes to personalize these ball players as much as possible to help introduce them to an audience that’s likely not familiar with them.
The cable network includes interesting factoids like favorite ball player or favorite singer.
LATEST STORIES
Nagiru Hiramatsu’s favorite singer or musical group is One Direction.
Somehow that showed up on the screen on a graphic as “Wandai Wrection,” according to the blog 18 Million Rising.
The Media Watch committee of the Asian American Journalists Association about one hour ago released a response from ESPN.
“It should have been caught,” Jackson Davis, ESPN’s director of diversity, told MediaWatch .
“Our goal is to always get things correct right out of the gate,” Davis said. “When something like this occurs, we try to get to the bottom of it.”
ESPN acknowledged the error almost immediately after their Monday broadcast.
