KoreAm: 30th Anniversary of release of Chol Soo Lee to be commemorated

KW LeeA milestone case in the Asian American civil rights movement will be commemorated this Saturday in Los Angeles.

KoreAm reports the 30th anniversary of the release of convicted murderer Chol Soo Lee will be marked with a symposium at Kardia United Methodist Church in Los Angeles.

Chol Soo Lee was wrongfully convicted for the killing of a San Francisco Chinatown gang leader and given a life sentence. While in prison, he killed another inmate in self defense and was sent to death row.

Pioneer Korean American journalist KW Lee (pictured)  wrote a series of stories for the now defunct Sacramento Union questioning the verdict and a movement grew to win Lee’s release.

The event Saturday will feature both Chol Soo Lee and KW Lee.

  1. Re: 30th anniversary of release of Choo Soo Lee: Let’s also remember that KW Lee is also a pioneer member of the Asian American Journalists Association & I think got lifetime achievement award from the organization. Another similar case is David Wong who was accused of homicide in an upstate NY prison, he was finally released after 17 years & deported back to China.

I wonder if Choo Soo Lee got any $$$ from a lawsuit after he got out. Wish I could meet both on their 30th anniversary….
