NBC: Do It Yourself plastic surgery puts some #Asians at risk

plastic surgeryMuch has been written of late about the growing prevalence of Asian Americans electing to have plastic surgery (photo by April Sanders)  to change their eyes after a revelation by Julie Chen that she had the surgery.

The practice actually first became popular in Asia before growing in acceptance in the United States.

Now NBC is reporting those in South Korea who can’t afford the surgery but still may want to westernize their look are turning to do it yourself kits to do the job.

“We want to become pretty without spending all the money,” Na, aged 17, told the Global Post.  “We know that these methods aren’t approved of, but lots of our peers do it. Girls [in our all-girls school] like girls who look pretty.”

A pair of glasses that forces your eyes to stay open to give it a more Western look sells for less than $20 on line.

A $6 device supposedly pushes your jaw line in to make it more oval.

Hopefully these devices don’t become popular in the United States. I hate to see teens physically doing harm to themselves.

What do plastic surgeons and doctors say about these devices and are they safe? You can read about that on NBC.

  1. JRE: Do it yourself plastic surgery puts some Asian teens at risk: ust maybe if Katy Perry is into the “Asian look” she will undergo plastic surgery. I guess when that backfires, maybe Asian girls will have a more positive outlook on themselves. We never hear of whites wanting or undergoing prcedures to look more Asian…..
