Michigan Daily: South Asian American Vagina Monologues hits campus

Yoni Ki BaatTaboo topics for women of color such as masturbation and sex  took center stage in Angell Hall at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor recently, reported the Michigan Daily.

The show Yoni ki Baat, which translates to Talks of the Vagina in Hindi, was inspired by The Vagina Monologues in San Francisco.

The play is designed to bring tough to talk about women’s issues to light. An organization known as the South Asian Sisters saw the show and noticed it did not deal with the experiences of women of color. It would later receive permission to produce their own version of the program.

This is the eighth year Yoni ki Baat has been performed at the University of Michigan.

“We really wanted our show to represent the female voices of this campus…and their experiences whether they’re awesome and funny or sad and empowering,” said senior Niki Aggarwal.

You can read more about the show in the Michigan Daily.

If you’re in the San Francisco Bay Area, you can see the South Asian Sisters perform it this weekend at the Fort Mason Center.
