Yale Daily News: Yale to host first Asian alumni reunion

David Henry HwangIt’s been 160 years since Yale graduated its first Asian student.

Next month, the campus will host its first ever Asian alumni reunion, reports the
Yale Daily News.

Featured speakers include distinguished alumini Pepsi Chief Executive Officer Indra Nooyi SOM ’80, Tony Award-winning playwright David Henry Hwang DRA ’83(pictured), U.S. Ambassador to China Gary Locke ’72 and composer-pianist Vijay Iyer ’92.

“These are not ‘Asian leaders,’” reunion co-chair Julie Wong said. “They’re leaders.”

The reunion will be held April 11-13.

Yung Wing graduated from Yale College in 1854 becoming the University’s first Asian alumnus.

  1. RE: Yale to hold first Asian alumni reunion: Seems to me that they have had previous reunions. I recalled there was one in NYC with Don Nakaski who started Amerasia Journal at UCLA. But I guess if this is an “Asian” reunion, why include Gary Locke & David H. Hwang? They are Asian American in my mind, not merely Asian.
