President Obama has nominated Richard Rahul Verma as the next envoy to India, reports Zee News. If confirmed, Verma would become the first Indian American ever to hold the post.
Initial reaction to the news was positive.
“I know he understands the importance of strengthening the US-India partnership, and I look forward to working with him toward that goal as he takes on this new role,” said Rep. Ami Bera (D-CA), the only Indian American currently serving in Congress.
“To paraphrase Neil Armstrong, one small step for Ambassador Verma, and a giant leap for bilateral intimate ties between United States and India.” said attorney Ravi Batra.
Verma is a former Assistant Secretary of State for Legislative Affairs and currently is an attorney with Steptoe & Johnson LLP and Albright Stonebridge Group. He is also a Senior National Security Fellow at the Center for American Progress.
