Arianna Quan, 23, will be the only Chinese American to compete in the Miss America pageant in September.
Quan won the Miss Michigan pageant last week on a platform promoting multiculturalism.
“All throughout my life [being Asian-American has] been something that’s been a little bit uncomfortable for me to talk about,” she is quoted in Next Shark as saying.
“During this election year I realized how important it was for immigrants and naturalized citizens to speak out about their experiences in this country. We are so diverse. It’s so important for us to embrace that. That’s why my platform is what it is. Hopefully going to Miss America now during this election year I can raise awareness about what it means to be an American.”
Quan has joined the Rock the Vote campaign, encouraging especially millennials to register to vote.
She was born in Beijing and moved to the United States at age 6. She’s become quite a lightning rod in China with many commenting on social media that she is not really Chinese.
Some have even commented on her looks saying she is ugly.
Ouch. First if she isn’t Chinese, I must not be Chinese. I was born in the United States and my Chinese speaking skills are poor. Quan is bilingual and is a native of China.
And what’s with the comments about her appearance? Are they saying she now looks too American? I don’t quite get it.
Goes to show you trolls come in many languages.
You go, Arianna. Ignore the ignorant and represent.
