Indian American Anshdeep Singh Bhatia is the first Sikh to have been inducted into President Trump’s security detail, reports Hindustan Times. The India-born man was inducted last week after he completed training in the United States.

Bhatia had to seek court intervention against the job’s requirement to be clean shaven and turban-less, which was ultimately decided in his favor.

His father’s cousin, Kamaljeet Singh Bhatia, who lives in Kanpur, said the entire family was proud of him.

“Anshdeep’s devotion to his work was apparent from the fact that he visited his house for just five hours to attend the marriage of his sister because his training was going on when the marriage was slated,” Bhatia said of his nephew. “We all have congratulated his parents.”

His family had moved from Kanpur to Ludhiana during the 1984 anti-Sikh riots. Bhatia lost his uncle and a close relative when a frenzied mob stormed their house, an attack that also left his father Devendra Singh injured with three bullet wounds. His family moved to the United States in 2000 when Bhatia was 10 years old.

“The entire Sikh community is elated on his success,” said Ajeet Singh Bhatia, general secretary of Gurudwara Banno Sahib. He said that special prayers were held for Bhatia’s success in his new job.
