On Monday, Kamala Harris announced on Twitter that her presidential campaign raised $12 million. Several candidates have not yet released their fundraising numbers, which may help Harris distinguish herself among a crowded group of Democratic candidates.
Harris raised most of her money through online donations and social media. About 98% of Harris’s donations were $100 or less and half of the total contribution amount was garnered through digital contributions, the Los Angeles Times reports.
Senator Harris describes her campaign as a “real, grassroots campaign – by the people and for the people.” No corporate PAC’s or federal lobbyists have contributed to the fundraising amount. According to her post, reported by AOL, the Senator from California raised 218,000 individual contributions.
Around 11,000 of those individual contributions came from educators. Harris promises to heavily invest in teachers by increasing their base pay nationwide.
Despite labeling her campaign as a grassroots campaign, Harris has not been as successful at raising funds as other candidates. The Los Angeles Times noted that both Bernie Sanders and Beto O’Rourke reported more than $6 million in fundraising within the first 24 hours of their
