Democratic Rep. Judy Chu of California’s 27th Congressional District joins the majority of her Democratic colleagues in the House of Representatives who publicly support an impeachment inquiry into President Donald J. Trump.

In an interview with NPR’s Scott Simon yesterday, Chu cited Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s July 24 testimony as a “public call to action that I saw to protect our Democracy.”

“He was able to show the American public that Trump wasn’t exonerated, that there were at least 10 instances of Trump obstructing justice, that Trump asked others to lie and created false documents, even tampering with witnesses to cover up the truth,” Chu said. “But what made me do this even more was the fact that the Senate Intelligence Committee came out with a report the day after, saying that the Russian government had hacked into all 50 states in the election and, with Mueller’s testimony, that they were still doing it as we sat there.”

Though public polling does not currently support an impeachment inquiry, Chu is confident that the current ongoing investigations will reveal “some pretty damning evidence on what the president has been doing in office.”

Chu has been a longtime critic of President Trump on many other matters, such as immigration and a national minimum wage, according to the South Pasadena Review.

“We have a sacred duty as members of Congress to ensure that nobody is above the law,” Chu wrote in a statement released by her office earlier this week. “To do nothing given what we know is unacceptable.”
