Rap duo takes on coronavirus racism at urging of fan

By Louis Chan, AsAmNews National Correspondent

The Korean American rap duo Year of the Ox has a few choice words for those who think the answer to COVID-19 pandemic is to attack Asian Americans.

“In these times of panic and paranoia, it is predictable that people will start to point fingers and try to find someone to blame, but that is the opposite of what our society should be doing, said band member Lyricks to AsAmNews.

In a brief song entitled Coronavirus, he and fellow band member JL, respond to a request from a fan on the new app, Taki. They are asked to pen a rap in response to all the racism the Asian American community has endured in the wake of the pandemic.

“We feel that most people haven’t succumb to this sort of discrimination but there are those who have been blinded by ignorance and racism,” said JL. “We will not sit idle with our mouths closed and we hope that this Taki will help open the eyes of these people and help spread love instead of anger and hatred.”
