Joe Biden is leaving no doubt about where he stands on the racism and xenophobia faced by Asian Americans during the coronavirus pandemic.
In an oped published on Medium, Biden states “These disgusting and racist acts must stop. They are grounded in an impulse that is as ugly, as it is dangerously ignorant.
“I’ve said from the moment I launched my campaign that we are in a battle for the soul of this nation, and we need our leaders to set the example we all must follow as a nation,” he wrote.
While Donald Trump insisted on calling COVID-19 the Chinese virus for weeks, he only recently pulled back from that language and said the “virus is not their fault.”
These mixed messages have sent a confusing signal to the racists of the world who seem intent on keeping up their animosity and taking out the vitriol on Asian Americans.

“Donald Trump and his Administration have failed to show almost any moral leadership when it comes to this issue,” said Biden. “Indeed, Trump’s attempts to deflect responsibility away from his own failures in addressing this pandemic by calling the coronavirus the “Chinese Virus” during the White House press briefings stoked feelings of hatred and anger toward AAPIs.
