Vietnamese businesses vandalized in San Jose

Suspects smashed windows of at least five Vietnamese restaurants in San Jose. reports the San Francisco Chronicle.

Police say all the crimes happened during a three hour period this past week.

“There is no doubt that there has been a rise of hate crimes targeted at Asian Americans across our country due to fear and ignorance stemming from covid-19,” councilmember Lan Diep said on Twitter. “… Yet until we learn more about these incidents and intent is established, it is still too soon to conclude that what happened today is a hate crime.”

KTVU reported that as many as 7 businesses were hit.

“It was heartbreaking because we are trying to operate like a normal day-to-day business and this creates concerns for our employees,” said 7 Leaves Owner Vinh Pham to KTVU.

According to one business owner, surveillance video consistently shows the same suspect and truck involved in each incident.

“That truck is very unique, look at the rims,” said San Jose Police Chief Eddie Garcia to NBC Bay Area. “Look at the, just at the style of the truck, the chrome tool box that’s in the truck.”
