Graffiti vandal targets China Daily in support of Hong Kong protesters

By Louis Chan, AsAmNews National Correspondent

An artist used red paint to vandalize news racks belonging to the China Daily.

New York-based artist Maura Moynihan posted photos of her action on Facebook.

“In solidarity with the freedom fighters in #HongKong I poured blood paint on another #China Daily newsbox in New York City. HEY PAPA XI THE WORLD IS WATCHING AS YOU COME IN FOR THE KILL!,” she wrote.

Maura Moynihan admitted on Facebook she poured paint on this China Daily news rack in New York City.

The protest is in response to China’s passage of its National Security Law which many fear will erode freedoms in Hong Kong. The law criminalizes any opposition to the Chinese government. Hundreds of people have been arrested in Hong Kong who protested the bill.

Moynihan is an artist who frequently incorporates images and themes representing Thailand, Nepal, Tibet, and India into her work. She describes herself as an artist, singer-songwriter, novelist and journalist.

“Another CHINA DAILY newsbox full of #CCP propaganda which I defaced with blood red paint,” she wrote. “China Daily has for YEARS published full page weekly ads and inserts in the New York Times, Washington Post & Wall St. Journal. Why do the leading AMERICAN newspapers openly publish #CCP lies? Is it JUST about the money or are they rooting for the #CCP? KEEP SCORE PEOPLE!”

No word on whether she will face any consequences for her protest.
