Pvt Chee found dead at Ft. Hood

Pvt. Carlton Chee this week become the 27th soldier to die at Ft Hood this year, reports the Charlotte Observer.

Authorities say the 25-year-old soldier died Wednesday after collapsing during physical fitness training on his birthday on August 28.

The private is a decorated soldier who has received the National Defense Service Medal and the Army Service Ribbon, Lt. Colonel Ron Sprang told CBS News.

“[Carlton] was an amazing Trooper and so full of life and potential,” Sprang said. “Every loss effects every single person in this Battalion because we a family of warriors, but this is exceptionally heartbreaking.”

Among those who have died from Ft. Hood this year is Pvt. Mejhor Morta, 26, a Filipino American, was found unresponsive July 17, AsAmNews previously reported.

The Charlotte Observer reported Texas Republican U.S. Sen. John Cornyn has joined Democratic Sens. Elizabeth Warren and Ed Markey in calling for hearings into the string of deaths that started with the  killing of Spc. Vanessa Guillén by another soldier. Guillen’s family says she was sexually harassed.

“As parents and United States Senators, we are heartbroken by the deaths of SGT Fernandes, SPC Guillén, and the other U.S. soldiers stationed at Fort Hood, and we are determined to seek justice and answers for their families and to ensure the Army is implementing necessary reforms at Fort Hood, and that Congress is holding the Army accountable,” the senators said in a joint statement.
