Biden to Nominate Vanita Gupta as Associate Attorney General

Sources familiar with the presidential nominating process say Biden will nominate former civil rights attorney Vanita Gupta as Associate Attorney General, NPR reports.

The New York Times says Gupta would oversee a division of the department that argues on behalf of the federal government in court. She would also be in charge of a civil rights and civil litigation portfolio.

Gupta has been doing civil rights work for several years. Gupta was the head of the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division under President Obama.

The 41-year-old earned her BA at Yale University and her law degree from New York University in 2001.

After earning her law degree, Gupta went to work for NAACP Legal Defense Fund before going to work for the American Civil Liberties Union. While there, Gupta, who herself is the daughter of immigrants, filed a lawsuit against Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency over detention conditions for asylum seekers.

Gupta has been encouraging young people, especially young women, to aggressively pursue their dreams.

“History doesn’t reward timidity,” she said during an NYU commencement speech, according to NPR. “And even when other people in implicit, quiet ways will tell you to know your place, do not stay silent. And fellow women graduates I am especially talking to you here.”
