A new mobile COVID-19 testing clinic based in Los Angeles’ Chinatown hopes to reach underserved Asian American and Latinx communities, ABC7 reports.
Throughout the pandemic, communities of color in LA have had limited access to COVID-19 testing. Access has become even more limited since Dodger Stadium switched from providing tests to giving vaccinations.
With the help of federal funds and a $200,000 Neighborhood Builder Bank of America grant, the Chinatown Service Center has opened a mobile testing site that is open to anybody. Free COVID tests will be offered weekdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The mobile unit will travel to senior facilities, schools and offices in the west San Gabriel Valley and Chinatown.

Jack Cheng, the Chinatown Service Center clinical director, told San Gabriel Valley Tribune that they had tested 65 people by 4 p.m. on opening day, Wednesday, Sept. 27.
The Chinatown Service Center is currently working on securing a second mobile testing unit.

These concerted efforts to help underserved communities is so crucial in continuing to flatten the curve. It’s disgraceful that it didn’t start earlier in so many places. As a health care provider through Rocky Mountain Urgent Care, I’ve heard far too many stories about inequity in terms of receiving care on a normal basis, but it was only exacerbated during the pandemic.
A clear understanding of the role mobile clinics play in our communities should provide the evidence to justify policies that will enable an optimal integration of mobile clinics into our healthcare delivery system.
Still remember those days. It’s really a traumatic scenario when Covid-19 Pandemic strikes!
