Tense moments for a citizen journalist capturing footage of a manhole explosion in Astoria neighborhood of Queens in New York.
A woman who goes by the name of The Bing Buzz heard an explosion and saw smoke rising earlier this week.
As she ran towards the smoke and began recording, a second explosion could be heard coming from a manhole. Apparently this is quite common in the area when the weather gets cold.
Police began evacuating the area as a safety precaution. That’s when she says a man aggressively approached her.
“Suddenly, this random guy comes up to me out of nowhere, with no mask covering his mouth, repeatedly asking me “Yo why do Chinese people eat dogs?” and aggressively following me around. This was at the Broadway station on Broadway & 31st St in Astoria. He just targeted me as he was walking down the staircase. There’s a huge spike in anti-Asian hate crimes nowadays and there needs to be more awareness surrounding this issue..”
She says she began running frantically, dodging people as she tried to avoid the man. No one stepped in to help although she said it was obvious she was running away from him.
“I’m hoping that this will bring more awareness to the matter at hand. If you live in Astoria or will be around the neighborhood, please be aware of this man. I’m glad that there was a train station right there so that I could run up and escape him. This behavior is seriously unacceptable. Please be safe everyone!!
