A school district in Northern California is investigating a teacher who apparently made a slant eye gesture during a class on zoom in discussing Asian stereotypes.

SF Gate identified the teacher as Nicole Burkett of Grant Union High School in Sacramento.

According to the Sacramento Bee, Burkett made the gesture which many Asian Americans consider offensive while discussing Asian steretoypes.

“If your eyes go up, you’re Chinese. If they go down, they’re Japanese. If they’re just straight, you don’t know,” the Bee reported she said.

Grant High principal Darris Hinson says the campus does not tolerate racism, CBS13 reported

“The video is shocking and disappointing and does not represent the values held by Twin Rivers and the community. An investigation was immediately launched when we were notified about the video. Please know that Twin Rivers is committed to providing all students with a safe and civil learning environment in which all members of the school community are treated with dignity and respect. We do not tolerate any form of racism from any member of our school community.”

The station also posted a statement from the Twin Rivers Unified School District.

“The Board of Trustees will do everything within its authority to address the situation. The Board of Trustees has a tremendous responsibility to set the highest standards for professional conduct, and our employees have equal responsibility to meet these standards, always.”
