Four Asian Americans Help U.S. Win Team Figure Skating Silver Medal

On Monday, Madison Chock and Karen Chen clinched the silver medal for the United States in the team figure skating competition. Chen and Chock were two of four Asian Americans who helped the United States win silver.

Chen represented the U.S. in the team portion of the women’s free skate, skating to “Butterfly Lover’s Violin Concerto.” She was in tears after she skated a clean, beautiful program. She placed fourth overall, earning the U.S. seven points.

On Monday, Madison Chock and Evan Bates also represented the U.S. in the team free dance. Chock and Bates danced to tunes from Daft Punk, pretending to be astronauts. The pair finished first in the free dance, earning the U.S. 10 points.

Chock and Chen were not the only Asian Americans who contributed to the team’s silver medal. Nathan Chen, an individual gold medal contender, placed first in the team men’s short program on Thursday. His performance earned the U.S. 10 points. The next day, Vincent Zhou placed third in the team men’s free skate, earning the U.S. another important 8 points.

Chock and Bates were the last Americans to compete in the team event. They knew the pressure was on.

“We were very aware of what was going on. We were in the team box watching all of the events,” Chock told USA Today. “But that doesn’t change what we do when we get on the ice.”
