Head of NYPD Hate Crimes Task Force Re-Assigned

New York City Mayor Eric Adams has re-assigned Jessica Corey, the head of the NYPD’s Hate Crimes Task Force, New York Daily News reports.

Adams recently was confronted with claims that the Hate Crimes Task Force did not take an Asian woman’s allegations of a potential hate crime seriously.

“This is the first time someone has come to me with concerns,” Adams said, when asked about the allegations in an interview with ABC 7. “It should not work that way. First of all it should’ve been included, that’s part of the investigation.”

The NYPD has said that the re-assignment is not of a disciplinary nature.

“The Hate Crime Task Force works tirelessly to investigate all hate crimes and bring justice to the victims,” an NYPD spokesperson told News 12. “Recent changes to the Hate Crime Task Force were not related to this case nor were they disciplinary in nature.”

According to the Daily Mail, Adams spoke about the re-assignment on Monday.

“We were too slow in investigating [crimes] as possible hate crimes,’ Adams said according to The Daily Mail. “I wanted a new face there, a new vision.”

Corey has been reassigned to the firearms and tactics. It is not clear who will be replacing her.
