Doctor struck and killed by own car driven by a carjacker

A 34-year old doctor is dead after being run over by his own car after someone jumped in and stole it.

Dr. Rakesh Patel had left the car running as he dropped off a package to his girlfriend in Washington, DC when someone jumped in it, reports NBC4.

Patel tried to stop the carjacker, but when the car thief drove away, police say he struck and killed Patel.

“I always used to call him my baby,” his mother, Charulatta Patel, said to NBC4.

According to WJLA, Patel had just handed the package to his girlfriend and was embracing her, when the thief stole his car.

“Rakesh was one of the sweetest young men. He was kind and wonderful and a promising young doctor and his girlfriend is devastated beyond words,” said a friend.

Police found the car abandoned. Security footage shows four people trying to clean the car with bleach in an apparent effort to wash away any evidence.

The death left his girlfriend traumatized, telling MEAWW she is living a nightmare.

Police have released video of the hooded suspects.

Anyone with any information is asked to call 202) 727-9099 or text their tip to the Department’s TEXT TIP LINE at 50411.
