Museum gives out stun devices to fight anti-Asian hate

By Puneet Bsanti, AsAmNews Intern

As the hate crimes against the Asian American communities continued to grow, the Martial Arts Museum in Burbank CA decided to distribute stun devices for self-defense.

The museum gave out about 1,000 devices to the Asian American community. This was in response to the growing number of hate crimes against the community since the start of the pandemic.

“There is so much Asian hate going on, there is so little media coverage. I think it’s important to shed a light on what is happening to Asian Americans,” said Michael Matsuda, president of the Martial Arts History Museum, to AsAmNews.

Matsuda said the stun devices are finger stun guns that are intended for self-defense use.

“This is not violence fighting violence. This is to protect ourselves against an assault or attack. Hopefully, we will never have to use it. It’s better to have something than nothing at all,” he said.

In order to get a finger stun gun you have to be part of the Asian community. You also can only get one for yourself and not for a friend.

You will also have to attend a five-minute mandatory training class on how to properly use the finger stun gun. The distribution is on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Matsuda said their efforts to help the Asian American community will hopefully bring attention to the museum itself. The Martial Arts History Museum is a place to not only learn about martial arts but also about Asian art and music.

He said the intention of spreading awareness of the museum will educate the next generation.

“By helping the Martial Arts Museum expand, we need people’s support to grow. That way we can educate people on the positive influences of the Asian-American community,” he said.

Matsuda said there are still a few stun guns left at the museum.
