Two brothers drown in school swimming pool in New Jersey

Students and families of a school in Bayonne, New Jersey want to know how two brothers drowned at an indoor pool with lifeguards present.

ABC7 reports it happened 8:30 Wednesday night at the Lincoln Community School which had three life guards on duty at the time.

CBS New York identifies the boys as 16-year-old Jack Zheng and 19-year-old Chu Ming Zheng.

Counselors offered extra support for devastated students.

“For something like that to happen in the public, it’s such an open area. The pool is so large, but you can oversee the entire thing. For that to happen, it’s unbelievable,” student Christiana Davis said.

“Losing two of your sons, it seems very heartbreaking. I know everybody else is really sad about it. I know they were friends of people. So it must be hard,” one student named Melody said.

The life guards ran to the boys and pulled out from the deep end of the pool, reports the New York Post. They attempted to resuscitate the boys until emergency personnel arrived.

“Our hearts and prayers go out to the family and to all our community,” Bayonne Public Schools Superintendent John Niesz said in a statement. “We will have additional crisis counselors and guidance counselors [Thursday] at all schools.”

The police, school district, insurance companies and OSHA are all conducting independent investigations into the accident.

According to CBS New York, the boys parents were present at the time and their sister was also in the pool, but was not injured.
