Man indicted in alleged hate crime in NY subway station

Prosecutors Wednesday indicted a man accused of throwing an unknown liquid at two Asian women in New York and hurling racial slurs.

NBC4 reports Derrick Johnson, 40, faces two counts of third-degree assault and two counts of second-degree aggravated harassment.

DA Alvin Bragg told PIX11 transit riders of all backgrounds “deserve safety when they travel.”

“The rise of bias-driven crimes is unacceptable. We are expanding our Office’s Hate Crimes Unit to enhance these prosecutions while increasing community engagement and other preventative measures,” Bragg said.

“You f—ing Chinese. I don’t know why you’re here in America,” Johnson allegedly said, according to law enforcement sources who spoke to the New York Post. Johnson is also accused of spitting on one of the victims as she sat on the ground.

One victim suffered “significant bruising,” and substantial pain in her head and jaw, the DA said.

Police also arrested Johnson last month after they say he attacked two officers responding to a complaint of lewd conduct.
