“Paper Girls,” a new sci-fi television show starring Ali Wong and Riley Lai Nelet, is receiving several positive reviews from critics.
The show is set in 1988 and follows four girls who get stuck in between warring time travelers while on their paper route one morning. Nelet plays young Erin, a new girl on the paper route, while Wong plays the grown-up version of Erin.
CNN contributor Lisa Respers France was excited to see that Wong was part of the cast.
“I loved the premise, but two words had me hooked: Ali Wong,” Respers wrote of the show in a newsletter.
The show has also been compared to the critically acclaimed Netflix series “Stranger Things.”
“It is tremendous fun,” Lucy Mangan a critic for The Guardian writes. “It has great Stranger Things energy (or should that be The Goonies and Stand By Me meta-energy?) but everything feels fresh.”
But Caroline Framke, a critic at Variety, believes that the show deserves better than the “Stranger Things” comparisons.
“Suddenly, what at first looked like yet another throwback Amblin-esque series reveals a more bittersweet lens, and harder science fiction heart,” Framke writes.
