The New York Police Department has arrested a man in connection with the slashing of an Asian woman.
Anthony Evans, 30, allegedly walked up behind an Asian woman as she was walking along 42nd Street near Seventh Avenue around 10 a.m. Sunday, NBC New York reports. He then allegedly slashed her right hand with a weapon without saying a word.
“So scared, yeah,” the woman, who did not want her name used, told ABC 7 New York. “First time, so, so, so scared. A lot of bleeding.”
The 59-year-old said she’s not sure why he attacked her.
“No nothing, no conversation, no nothing,” she said. “We don’t know each other. No argue, nothing. Why you do this?”
According to CBS New York, police arrested Evans on Tuesday. On Monday, the NYPD said they were not investigating the incident as a hate crime. However, according to NBC New York, Evans was charged with assault as a hate crime after being arrested. It’s unclear what may have prompted that charge.
