A South Asian American veteran police officer with the New York Police Department is out of a medically-induced coma and improving after being attacked during his daily jog.
PIX11 reports the wife of Muhammad Chowdhury is now breathing on his own and eating and talking for the first time since being attacked on Tuesday during a run on Olmstead Avenue in the Bronx.
“He got his senses and he is doing well. He is responding to his wife,” Jamil Ahmed, a nephew said to the Daily News. “He’s speaking, responding to his wife and doctor.”
Authorities say the attackers stole his wallet and cell phone and left him nearly unconscious.
They believe the suspects are the same group accused in 19 carjackings and robberies in Queens and the Bronx this month.
His wife Nadira Sherin says she became concerned when her husband did not respond to phone calls and texts. He routinely went on a jog before his evening shift. Police came to her door to check on her husband when he failed to come to work. They returned 15 minutes later asking her to identify a photo of a patient in the hospital.
“I just couldn’t believe [it],” said Sherin. “[I was] crying and didn’t know what to do.”
Members of the Bangladeshi American Police Association are supporting Chowdhury’s family.
We just help each other out in times of need,” said Sgt. Ershadur Siddique, the organization’s vice president. “You will find people in good times, but we support each other in the bad times.
