Nicole Lee to run for Chicago City Council after being appointed

Alderman Nicole Lee announced recently that she will run to represent Chicago’s newly redrawn 11th ward in 2023. According to Block Club Chicago, the redrawn ward represents Chinatown, Bridgeport and parts of McKinley Park.

Lee was appointed Alderman of the 11th ward in March by Mayor Lori Lightfoot. She replaced Patrick Daley-Thompson who was convicted of tax fraud and other crimes, McKinley Park News reports. That year she became Chicago’s first Asian American Alderwoman.

At the time of her appointment, Lee was working as Director for Social Impact Optimization and Global Community Engagement at United Airlines.

“…giving up a job with global reach for one with local focus was a big change, but it was an opportunity I just couldn’t pass up, because today we’re making a difference in ways that people around her have never seen before,” Lee said in her announcement video.

In her announcement video, she praised efforts to increase policing while also attempting to address the root of crimes. She encouraged voters to work together.

“If we can come together to get things done, there’s nothing we can’t accomplish,” she said.
