Netflix’s three-hour Asian Indian hero saga, RRR, was nominated for two awards, but came away with one win for Best Song to become the first Asian song to win in this category. RRR was also nominated for Best Non-English Language Film, but lost to Argentina’s Argentina, 1985. M.M. Keeravani accepted the award on Tuesday night at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills at the 80th Golden Globe Awards ceremony.
Keeravani attended the ceremony with his wife who was the first person he mentioned in his acceptance speech.
“Thank you very much HFPA for this prestigious award, Golden Globe. I’m very much overwhelmed with this great moment happening and I’m very happy to share this excitement with my wife who is sitting right there. This award, it’s been a practice, an age-old practice to say, this award actually belongs to someone else. But I was planning not to say those words when I get an award like this. But I’m sorry to say I’m going to repeat the tradition because, I mean my words. This award belongs to in order of priority, my brother, and the writer of the movie, S. S. Rajamouli for his vision. I thank him for his constant trust in my work and support. And in order of priority, Mr. Prem Rakshith (choreographer) who animated the ‘Naatu Naatu’ song. Without him, this wouldn’t have happened. And Kala Bhairava who had given wonderful arrangements for the song. and for Mr. Chandrabose for his wonderful words as a lyricist and Mr. Rahul Sipligun and Kaala Bhairava who rendered the song with high energy. N. T. Rama Rao (Jr.) and Ram Charan who are with us who danced with full stamina for the song. Thank you all and last but not least S. Siddharth and G. Jeevan Babu, who programmed for the song. Wonderful work. Thank you very much.”
“RRR” has ignited some controversy, but also reminds us how little people in the US know about the history of India outside of what one sees in nostalgic or adventure British Raj films. You can view and listen to the full song below.
