Caucus renews push for Biden to add an AAPI cabinet secretary

The Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus is calling for President Joe Biden to nominate an AAPI official to a cabinet secretary position after it was announced Labor Secretary Marty Walsh would be transitioning out of his role.

According to Axios, the caucus is urging Biden to nominate Julie Su, who currently serves as deputy labor secretary, to replace Walsh. She previously served as Secretary of the California Labor and Workforce Development Agency under Gov. Gavin Newsom.

Caucus chair Rep. Judy Chu (D-CA) penned a letter to Biden on Friday asking him to nominate Su, NBC News reports. The letter was signed by 33 legislators.

“Deputy Secretary Su is a strong woman of color who is eminently qualified to take on the responsibility as U.S. Secretary of Labor and would deliver results for American workers and your administration immediately upon her confirmation,” the letter said, according to NBC News.
