Ex-Theranos exec Sunny Balwani reports to prison on fraud charges

Elizabeth Holmes’ former business and romantic partner turned himself into prison in San Pedro, California to begin his 13-year sentence on fraud and conspiracy charges, reports Yahoo Finance.

A jury found both Ramesh “Sunny” Balwani and Holmes guilty five years ago for defrauding investors of the Silicon Valley start up Theranos out of $120 million.

Holmes has been ordered to report to prison on April 27.

“Mr Balwani turned himself in… smoothly without incident,” Jeffrey Coopersmith, Balwani’s attorney, said to CNN Thursday. “We will continue to fight for him because we do not believe that he received a fair trial.”

Therano falsely claimed it could test for a wide range of medical conditions with just a few drops of blood.

The relationship between Holmes and Balwani turned cold after she accused him of sexually and emotionally abusing her, an accusation Balwani has denied.

Before that, the two raised $1 billion dollars for the company until the Wall Street Journal revealed in 2015 that their claims were false.
