Bantamweight boxing prospect Kenneth Egano won his last fight, but died doing it, reports Boxing News Online.
Egano collapsed in the ring on Saturday as it was announced that he had won a unanimous decision over Jason Facularin in Imus, Cavite, Philippines.
The 22 year old fell into a coma after suffering a brain hemorrhage and died Wednesday.
The fight between him and Facularin had been promoted by boxing legend Manny Pacquaio as part of the champ’s Blow by Blow series.
“There is nothing more precious than human life,’ Pacquiao said, reported BoxingScene. “Boxing is truly a dangerous sport and the boxers deserve nothing but respect as they put their lives on the line. Other sports you play, but you don’t play boxing.”
Facularin himself expressed shock at the news.
“I didn’t expect that this will happen when we did our best. Why did it happen to us? Sorry that it happened. I hope you’re in a good place.”
According to Boxing Junkie, Facularin knocked down Egano during their bout, but Egano bounced back up and went on to win decisively.
It was just Egano’s eighth professional fight.
