High School Fil Am basketball star makes USA U-19 roster

Filipino American high school basketball star Dylan Harper has been named to Team USA’s under-19 squad, NJ.com reports. The team will compete at the FIBA U19 World Cup in Hungary later this month.

Harper, 17, is the son of Ron Harper, who won five NBA championships (three with the Chicago Bulls and two with the Los Angeles Lakers). According to ABS CBN, Harper’s mother Maria is Filipino and played college basketball at the University of New Orleans.

The young player is currently a high school junior at Don Bosco Preparatory High School in Ramsey, New Jersey. According to Slam, he averaged 18.9 PPG, 7.1 RPG, & 5.3 APG on Nike Youth Basketball. Travis Branham, a basketball analyst for 247Sports, described Harper as “a 6-foot-4 combo guard with a terrific blend of size, skill and feel for the game” on Harper’s 247Sports profile.

A blog post on Sports Illustrated’s Hoosiers Now blog identified Harper as an Indiana University recruiting target. The post said the class of 2024 potential recruit has taken an official visit to the university. NJ.com also says Harper has piqued the interest of Rutgers’ basketball program.

Harper also has a 22-year-old brother Ron Harper Jr., who played for Rutgers. Ron Jr. was drafted by the Toronto Raptors in the 2022 NBA draft. The 22-year-old discussed his heritage during an interview featuring both of their parents last year.
