Republican Congresswoman Virginia Foxx (R-N.C.) has called for a watchdog review into Julie Su’s status as “acting” Labor Secretary, Bloomberg Law reports.
Su has served in the role since former Labor Secretary Marty Walsh left in March. Biden nominated Su for the position in February but her confirmation has been in limbo ever since. Republicans and right-leaning Democrats like Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) have refused to vote for her confirmation.
According to Reuters, Foxx, chair of the House of Representatives’ Committee on Education and the Workforce, wrote a letter to the U.S. Government Accountability Office asking how long Su could remain in her temporary role. The GOA says it will investigate.
“GAO accepts your request as work that is within the scope of its authority,” the agency wrote in a July 18 response to Foxx, according to Bloomberg Law. “We anticipate that staff with the required skills will be available shortly to initiate an engagement.”
Meanwhile, the Biden administration and other Democratic leaders remain supportive of Su. During a visit to the Philadelphia union hall on August 8, Vice President Kamala Harris corrected herself after introducing Su as “acting” labor secretary.
“I’ll call her Labor secretary. I’m not going to say the word ‘acting,’” Harris said according to POLITICO.
“I’ve known her for many years. And she is a true fighter for the working people and working families of America. Thank you!” the vice president added.
