Asian American Unity Coalition Hosts DC Summit

A recent summit of the Asian American Unity Coalition (AAUC) in Washington D.C. brought together more than 60 attendees from 19 states to learn about pivotal bills involving civil liberties, property discrimination and visa processing, among other issues, according to the India Post.

The event took place Sept. 26 and 27, and attendees ranged in age from under 25 to over 65, the report said.

“This event showcased the power of unity within AANHPI [Asian American and Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander] communities. After many years of working together, the AAUC continues to demonstrate that cooperation helps to lift everyone up,” said S.K. Lo, president of the AAUC, according to the report.

Attendees learned about bills aimed at addressing various challenges within AANHPI communities:

  • Eliminating Backlogs Act of 2023 (H.R. 1535): This legislation aims to eliminate visa backlogs that have long affected AANHPI communities, providing relief from delays in visa processing.
  • Teaching Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander History Act (H.R. 3434 and S. 1702): This bill strives to ensure that AANHPI history is an integral part of American education, guaranteeing that the heritage and contributions of these communities are fully recognized.
  • Korematsu-Takai Civil Liberties Protection Act of 2023 (S. 129): This legislation is dedicated to safeguarding civil liberties within AANHPI communities, underscoring the significance of protecting individual rights.
  • Afghan Adjustment Act (H.R. 4627 and S. 2327): Tackling critical issues related to Afghan refugees, this bill emphasizes the need for compassionate and practical solutions.
  • Preemption of Real Property Discrimination Act (H.R. 3697): This bill aims at addressing real property discrimination and ensuring equal access and opportunities for AANHPI communities.
